Join Us

  • Do you care about what happens in Workington and the surrounding areas?
  • Have you ever said to yourself, "why doesn't somebody do something about that before it's too late?"
  • You can make a difference!. . . especially if there are enough of us: there is strength in numbers.
  • The Workington & District Civic Trust is made up of individuals just like you, who also care about this town, and are trying to influence how it develops in the future.
  • Your support is most welcome.
  • Join here. Annual membership fee for 2006 is £6.00. Changes will be advertised in future newsletters.

WHAT DO WE DO?

  • We are producing and archiving a photographic record of the town.
  • We research and record sites of local historic interest.
  • We hold talks on topics of local and national interest.
  • We keep a watchful eye on planning applications and comment on these.
  • We go on visits with other civic societies.
  • We offer comments and seek representation on the regeneration of Workington.
  • We liaise with regional and national civic trusts.

WHAT DO I GET FOR MY MEMBERSHIP FEE?

WALKS, TALKS & GHOSTS
Apart from getting involved in Workington's heritage (as little or as much as you wish), membership of Workington & District Civic Trust gives you free access to up to six talks/presentations, guided Town Walks, and a Halloween Ghost Walk per year.

COACH TRIPS
We arrange a coach trip to a place of interest each year and try to keep the cost of this to the minimum. Other local Civic Trusts welcome us to join any of their trips and their members come on ours.

NEWSLETTERS
GARDEN PARTY

You will also receive three or four newsletters throughout the year which aim to keep members up to date with projects.

Also, members and guests are invited to a Summer Garden Party, usually attended by our President, John Cook, Esq, Lord of the Manor of Workington, with the Town and Allerdale Mayors in attendance also, when we enjoy varied entertainment while tucking in to home-baked scones and cakes.

Our October AGM usually concludes with a speaker and light refreshments after the business of the meeting.

THE HELENA THOMPSON MUSEUM
Most of the above take place at the Helena Thompson Museum, which is now being run by Workington Heritage Group Ltd. This Group started out as a sub-committee of the Workington & District Civic Trust. Access to all parts of the Museum is free to the public, and the Garden Party is a wonderful opportunity to see how much work is being done to revitalise it.

Copies of our Constitution and Rules are available for inspection at Workington, Seaton and Harrington Libraries; Allerdale House, the Tourist Information Office, and St Michael's Church, all in Workington; and in the Post Offices at Scaw Road and Church Road, Harrington. A copy can be sent to anyone who is unable to access any of these sites, by contacting the Secretary at the address on the membership application form.
