Workington & District Civic Trust was formed in 2001 to channel the
public outcry over the loss of the original 1912 educational building to make way for a
hostpital. When Lakes College West Cumbria was built at Lillyhall, activities at Park Lane
were transferred there. The whole area was purchased by the North Cumbria Primary Care
Trust as a suitable site for the new community hospital to replace the out-of-date infirmary.
Members of the public lobbied hard but failed to have the fine old building incorporated into
the plans. However, two members of Workington & District Civic Trust were invited to
sit on the PFI sub-committee and helped to choose a design which reflected elements of the
